Two of my new all-time favorite episodes two weeks in a row? Yes, please! What better way to follow up a Ben spotlight than a Sawyer-centric episode? (Then, we finally get our Richard Alpert ep next week - heaven!)
As you might imagine, this episode really clicked for me. Not only was it centered on my fave guy, but it also seems like things are moving into their near-final positions for the big battle to come. And, the sideways story was a really good one. Loved it!
My Sideways Theory
I've been working on this for a few weeks, the idea that characters' ultimate level of happiness in the sideways world (which I still think is a future timeline that they'll all reach after the Island battle) depends on their actions on the Island. The people who are Team Jacob seem much happier or at least more satisfied with life than the Team Flocke folks. But, this theory is still in its early stages and I know that we need a few more key sideways storylines to back it up. Sawyer's story is one I've been waiting for.
My Safe Word is "LaFleur"
In the sideways world, James Ford is not a con man... he's a cop!!! And Miles is his good friend and partner, someone whom he's let close enough to challenge him and finally ferret out his deep, dark family secrets. I LOVED this storyline. Ford as a cop, just like LaFleur as the head of security, makes total sense. I could definitely see this as a redeemed life for our Sawyer, someone who is still driven by his childhood tragedy but turned into a good guy instead of a bad guy.
And a friend and I were trying to guess which Lost Lady would be Sawyer's sideways gal... I was hoping for Juliet, but never would have guessed Charlotte! That was an interesting pairing. Less overall meaning than if it were Juliet or Kate, but I still liked it. Although, what archaeologist wears such a ridiculous spangly dress???
What to make of the final sideways moment of side-swiping Kate on the run? We shall see... but I hope that doesn't mean another Kate-centric ep. There's only 8 left, and still so much more to do!
PS - Much like I would watch the Dr. Linus/John Locke public school teachers spinoff, I would also totally watch the James Ford / Miles Straum buddy cop show. My friend AJ thinks it would be even more awesome than Miami Vice!
A Double-Cross, or Make that a Triple
So, if Sawyer is playing Widmore and playing Flocke at the same time, is that a double-cross or a triple-cross? Or just an awesome con for our con man?
I bought into Sawyer's submarine deal with Widmore at first. How great was that scene by the way, with Josh Holloway and Alan Dale going toe-to-toe with their steely-eyed glares? :-) This is how I thought Sawyer might end up back on the side of the good guys. But, I should've remembered Sawyer's main credo in life, which he repeated to Kate early on tonight. "I ain't with nobody."
Sawyer is his own man and will play whichever side he needs to get ahead, but especially after the ultimate tragedy of his Dharma years, he's not a joiner. I just hope he remembers he's up against some very tricky, very bad dudes... Sawyer fits that description too, but "the smoke thing" isn't just an ordinary con man he can outsmart. I still worry about the big lug - tonight I was very afraid he was gonna get shot in that outrigger, by time-skipping Juliet - and I still hope he survives the series.
Just sayin', if he showed up at my door with a six-pack and a silly sunflower, I wouldn't slam the door in his face.
Island Catfight
How AWESOME was it when Claire attacked Kate???? And creepy Sayid just sat there and did nothing? My friend AJ dreams of the day when Kate bites it, and for a moment there I hoped her dream would come true. Alas, they hugged and made up... to be annoying for another day.
Widmore
So, if Widmore wants to kill Flocke... is he really just his own side? I don't think he's Team Jacob, cuz back in season 5 Bram tried to prevent Miles from getting on the freighter. Bram was with Jacob, so that should mean Widmore's on the other side. But perhaps he's an enemy to both? And he came equipped with his own army.... maybe he is anti-Island, and Jacob and Flocke are the two sides battling FOR the Island.
Hmmmmmm...... thoughts???

After the show was over tonight, I thought how fun a Sawyer & Miles, "Law & Order: Found" series would be. It would be much more fun for me than Locke and Linus as teachers.
YAAAY!!! RICHARD ALPERT STORY NEXT WEEK!!!!!
