Oh LOST, how I love you so.... but I am really ready for you to be over. As much as I'm going to miss LOST, I'm really looking forward to a time when tv is just tv for me, and I don't build up a crazy level of expectation that is sure to just lead to disappointment. I am glad it's ending soon, because I just want to know how it ends. I'm ready for all the highs and lows of the speculation to be over. TV should just be TV.
So, I think that's why I both liked and was disappointed by "Across the Sea." I want more! More than an interesting, well-acted hour of television. I want more than kinda cheesy religious allusions. I want more than a kinda vague origin story. Who is the Mother? (Or as I kept calling her in my notes, "Creepy Allison Janney") Where did she come from? Was there a guardian before her? What kind of magical power does she have to make the boys live forever?
For a show that has always been about Daddy issues, suddenly now we see at its heart, it's about some MAJOR Mommy issues. So is that what's at the root of all of this? The truly unnamed MIB is still, deep down, a sullen teenager who just wants to leave home to prove his Mom wrong, that he really can make it in the big bad world?
Speaking of big bad, I don't feel like this episode made any clarifications on whether Smokey is EVIL vs. just someone who has an agenda. And since MIB's body has been dead for a very long time, does that mean any time we've seen him appearing to Jacob or Richard as Titus Welliver, that he's a ghost? Smokey manifests as dead bodies, including his own?
Ok.... I am really ready for the next few weeks. I don't know how it will turn out, and who will remain living, though my bet is on Jack being the next guardian.
For further reading, Alan did a great recap of all of the things we learned in this origin ep:
